FIGURES
Beginning with a piece of fabric or a spool of thread, I have created well-defined fiber sculptures by pleating, weaving, wrapping and embroidering. My images represent the human body, the way we or others see ourselves - how are bodies are interpreted by cultures, gender, advertisers and the media. The process of manipulating these fibers into figurative sculptures, present a technical challenge that I thrive at mastering. My figures range from 8" to full bodied figures of over six feet.
Some of the figures are created using sculpture wire, which was bent and then manipulated into the shape of the female head and upper torso. I have displayed emotions through color, fibers, materials and form. While looking at Benin sculptures, the scarification lines lead me to my hand pleated work. Some of the fabric heads and figures were created using this smocking technique.
