MOSAICS
In 2005 I visited the Vatican and notices large 'portraits' which lined the walls of Saint Peter's Basicilia. Upon closer scrutiny I realized these were not oil paintings as I assumed, but mosaics made with very tiny rocks and glass. I instantly knew that I wanted to use this technique but would use hand dyed cotton fabrics instead of glass.
The fabric was cut into 3/16" squares. With this small size, I was able to create details, contours and shadowing and still keep the art to a reasonable size. From the distance, I have created a painter's translation of the original photograph but as you approach the art work, you realize it is made of separate and distinct squares.
